USA: UN, Palestinian envoys urge immediate Gaza ceasefire to stop suffering of civilians
New York, United States - August 22, 2024
A UN Middle East envoy and a Palestinian envoy Thursday urged the United Nations Security Council to take concrete actions for an immediate ceasefire in the war-torn Gaza Strip to stop the suffering of millions of Palestinian people there.
The two envoys made the statement at a Security Council meeting convened on Thursday to discuss the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question.
UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland told the meeting via video link from Jerusalem that the current situation in the Middle East is at an inflection point, and it's necessary to reach a Gaza ceasefire and a hostage release deal without delay for the sake of regional peace and security.
Also speaking at the meeting, Riyad Mansour, permanent observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations, repeated his call for the Security Council to take concrete actions to end the war in Gaza.
