A friendly whale shark emerged from the sea and swam near boats in Thailand.

Footage shows the marine animal gliding near the surface of the water as families watched from wooden vessels in Phang Nga province.

Some of the tourists jumped into the water and swam alongside the animal which didn't leave despite having humans around.

One of the tourists Rome Kullabus said the water in area was only 66 feet (20 meters) deep.

He said: ‘The whale shark does not hurt people because it only eats small fish the size of chopsticks.'

The whale shark is considered 'Endangered' on the IUCN Red List and is listed as a protected species in Appendix II of CITES and the Wild Animal Conservation and Protection Act of Thailand.
