STORYLINE:

Jordan launched an initiative on Monday to support amputees in Gaza in response to an unprecedented increase in limb injuries resulting from the ongoing conflict.

The initiative, which comes under the direction of King Abdullah II, offers advanced technology that enables the fitting of functional prosthetic limbs for amputees within one hour.

The personnel at Jordan's National Center for Amputee Rehabilitation, part of the King Hussein Medical Center, have received training in the technology and successfully fitted a young boy from Gaza, who underwent a triple amputation, with prosthetic limbs, allowing him to walk with a walker in just one day.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): YAZAN AL-HARAZIN, Patient form Gaza
"I had the opportunity to come to Jordan for treatment and I had prosthetic limbs fitted, thanks to the Royal Medical Services who fitted me with these prosthetic limbs and alleviated my suffering. I thank them very much. Without them, I would not be able to walk."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): MOHAMMED AL-BAKHET, Doctor with Royal Medical Services
"Yazan is a patient from Gaza who suffered several amputations in his upper limb and both legs. He came to Jordan, and we immediately started the rehabilitation program and installed prosthetic limbs with our new technology. We installed implants in his hand and legs and now he can walk and depend on himself."

Two mobile amputee support units, equipped with all necessary tools, will be deployed to the Jordanian military field hospitals in Gaza, where they will start fitting amputees with prosthetic limbs.
