A teenager stuck under a bridge amid a surging river was rescued by neighbours.

The 17-year-old youngster was swimming in the water when the currents suddenly became stronger and he could not return to the banks in Iloilo province, the Philippines on August 19.

Footage shows the lad taking refuge at the concrete foot of the bridge while powerful water gushed through.

His neighbours gathered on the banks while rescuers rushed to retrieve him with a rope from above.

They lowered a rope with an inflatable vest, which the youngster was asked to wear, but he was scared he would fall.

Soon after, a brave neighbour waded through the gushing water and guided him back despite the strong currents.

Neighbour Vicente Orteguia said: There was heavy rain in the mountains which flowed to the river. Rescuers arrived on the scene as well as a brave man who risked his safety to save the kid.'

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season, which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
