Thousands of pounds have been raised for a homeless busker after a video of his incredible guitar talents went viral on TikTok.

John Metcalfe, 59, was filmed wowing drivers with his rendition of the Dire Straits song ‘Sultans of Swing' as they queued up at a MacDonald's drive-thru.

And now over £3,500 have been donated to the rough sleeping dad - who is hoping to buy a camper van to tour the country in while playing his songs.

John was spotted in a chance encounter by Stephen Flynn after he had gone for breakfast at the fast food outlet in Liverpool on August 20 with some colleagues.

He went on to capture his masterful performance of the 1978 classic and shared it on TikTok – which has since attracted over 10.5 million views.

Following his social media success, Stephen set up a GoFundMe page to support John after finding out he had been living in a broken-down Peugeot 207.

He said: "We normally go to a café by our work, me and my mates, but we decided to go to McDonald's."

"And as we finished our breakfast, coming back out, we spotted John on the corner. My mate said, ‘Look at him with his guitar.' "

"So I went right round to him, and as I drove round, I started to record. I just said, 'Give us a little tune,' and the rest is history. "

"I put it on TikTok and it just went through the roof."

"I went back, and I saw him, and I went, ‘John, you've gone viral. Give us your number, I'll stay in contact with you.' "

"Ever since then I've been ringing him every day and I've been going up and looking after him."

John, originally from Allerton, in Liverpool, has spent most of his life travelling through the Middle East and Europe after leaving the UK at the age of 23.

He did a variety of jobs, while also keeping up his busking, as he journeyed across countries including the Netherlands, France and Spain.

But John was sent back to Britain following visa issues while he was in Norway - and has since struggled to get proper housing with his girlfriend, Hege.

Stephen said he was in awe of the amount of money that locals had put towards John, who has since been offered the chance to perform in Liverpool.

He added: "It just started ticking over – it's got about £3,500 in it now. People just come together when things like this happen."

"He just needed a little bit of a pick me up. He hasn't looked back since."

"Hopefully he'll get his little campervan and he can then sail off into the sunset with his bird, that's the plan."
