Chicago, United States - August 27, 2024

Chicago residents in the U.S. have been flocking to local beaches to escape the scorching heatwave that has gripped the city in recent days, with many people eager to cool off and take respite from the record-breaking temperatures.

Excessively high temperatures gripped much of the U.S. Midwest on Tuesday, including major cities such as Chicago, as reported by the National Weather Service. A series of heat alerts have since been issued amid the soaring temperatures.

Trying to beat the heat, residents and visitors in Chicago flocked to city beaches amidst the excessive heat warning.

"Yeah, I mean it is. I mean you can feel it. I mean, as soon as you take a few paces outside, you start getting that sweat on your forehead. Especially, like I said, when you get down here and it's just pure sun," said a resident.

"I mean, just standing in the sun, you're melting, but you just get some water, you fill it up, you soak it in, because we all know in a couple months, we are going to wish we had half of this temperature," another resident said.

Exacerbating the situation, Chicago is under an Air Quality alert, advising individuals with respiratory conditions to stay indoors. Specific outdoor events in the city have been canceled, and some schools have chosen to halt outdoor sporting activities. With temperatures breaking records in Chicago, the city has set up numerous cooling centers.
