Furious hammer-wielding passenger smashes airport check-in desk in Chile
A furious passenger sparked panic inside an airport as he attacked check-in desks in Chile.
The suspect was trying to board an American Airlines flight to Miami on his way home to Haiti but learned that he had been sold a fake ticket at Santiago International Airport on August 27.
The unidentified would-be passenger argued with airline staff who reportedly confirmed he was scammed. He then flew into a rage and smashed items on the counter including monitors.
Footage shows the Haitian national using a hammer to destroy the screens including computers.
Western Santiago Prefecture Patrol Lieutenant Manuel Narvaez said: ‘During the course of the afternoon, a Haitian national who had problems boarding a flight he had purchased realized that this flight had never been reserved.'
The damage to five computers and six screens he caused was estimated to cost 20 million CLP (16,572.19 GBP).
American Airlines said in a statement: ‘Local law enforcement responded to the airport lobby area at Santiago de Chile (SCL) due to a disruptive individual.
‘We thank our team for their professionalism and apologise to our customers for the inconvenience.'
The attacker was arrested and was scheduled for trial on August 28.
