Why did it happen? Thunderstorms form when three conditions are present:
Instability: The atmosphere is unstable when warm, moist air is near the ground and cold, dry air is above it. This means that if a parcel of air is nudged upwards, it will continue to rise on its own.
Moisture: Moisture near the ground can contribute to atmospheric instability.
Lifting: Something needs to trigger motion in the atmosphere, such as a boundary, heating from the sun, or cooling aloft.

As the warm air rises, it cools and condenses into water droplets, forming cumulonimbus clouds. The water droplets eventually combine to form larger droplets that freeze into ice crystals. The opposite charges in the clouds and on the ground can become strong enough to create cloud-to-ground lightning. Lightning usually seeks an easy path to release its charge, which can be between or inside clouds, or to the ground or a tall object.

Thunderstorms are most common in tropical and temperate regions, and are rare near the poles. In the Northern Hemisphere, thunderstorms usually develop between May and September, and in the Southern Hemisphere, between November and March.
