In a compassionate response to an overwhelmed rabbit caregiver's plea for help, the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and the McKamey Animal Center (MAC) executed a large-scale rescue operation in Chattanooga on August 20. The teams arrived at the residence to find more than 100 rabbits living in conditions that were both unsanitary and overcrowded.

The rabbits, discovered in various states of health, suffered from flea infestations, hair loss, and injuries likely due to the cramped living conditions. Among them were multiple nursing litters and rabbits of all ages, some possibly pregnant, burrowing into furniture for space. The caregiver, a long-time rabbit enthusiast, had faced a health crisis that led to the uncontrolled growth of his rabbit population, rendering him unable to provide adequate care.

Jessica Johnson, senior director of the HSUS's Animal Rescue Team, highlighted the unique aspect of this case: "This one stands out because it was brought about by a caregiver recognizing he was beyond his capacity—he loves his pets enough to let them go so they can find homes where they can thrive." This acknowledgment underscores a poignant moment of self-awareness and care for the animals' welfare over personal attachment.

Inga Fricke, Executive Director of the MAC, expressed gratitude for the HSUS's involvement, noting, "The house is sadly in deplorable condition and is not suited for animals to reside in at this time." The collaboration between the two organizations facilitated an immediate response to alleviate the suffering of both the animals and the overwhelmed caregiver.

The rescued rabbits are now being transported to a temporary emergency shelter set up by the HSUS. Here, they will receive comprehensive veterinary care, addressing their immediate health needs. Once stabilized, the HSUS will work with shelter and rescue partners to find adoptive homes for these rabbits, giving them a second chance at a healthy life.
