Des Moines, United States - August 19, 2024

A dramatic rescue unfolded late Monday night on the Des Moines River when a boat carrying seven individuals capsized, leading to a swift response from Des Moines police and fire crews. The incident occurred near the Botanical Center around 10:30 p.m., prompting a coordinated effort to save those stranded in the water.

According to emergency services, an officer at the scene witnessed several people struggling in the river, with one person perched atop the overturned boat, which was drifting dangerously close to the I-235 bridge. The Des Moines Fire Department (DMFD) confirmed that among the seven aboard the boat when it flipped, one managed to reach the shore independently.

The remaining six were in a perilous situation until Des Moines police officers, positioned on the I-235 bridge, threw a rope to them. This lifeline allowed the individuals to hold on until DMFD rescue boats could reach them, successfully pulling them from the water.

Sgt. Paul Parizek from the Des Moines Police Department reported that all rescued individuals were fortunate not to require hospital treatment, indicating no serious injuries from the ordeal.
