Leipzig, Germany - August 18, 2024

A dramatic incident unfolded at the Highfield Festival near Leipzig on August 18, 2024, when a Ferris wheel caught fire, leading to injuries among festival-goers. The fire, which started in one gondola and quickly spread to another, resulted in at least 23 people being injured, with reports confirming four individuals suffered burns and one from a fall.

The incident, captured in a video shared by Instagram user "social_running_dj," showed the Ferris wheel engulfed in flames, creating a scene of chaos and fear among the attendees. According to the eyewitness account, the gondolas directly affected by the fire were evacuated in time, but the situation was described as "horrific."

The response from the stage was met with criticism, as German rapper Ski Aggu, who was performing at the time, initially downplayed the incident, comparing it to a minor fire despite visible flames and smoke. This led to boos from the crowd, who felt his reaction was disrespectful given the severity of the situation. It was only after the intervention of the fire brigade and persistent calls from the audience that Ski Aggu acknowledged the gravity of the event.

Local emergency services were quick to respond, preventing what could have been a more catastrophic outcome. The festival's emergency protocols were put to the test, with first responders, including police officers, also at risk of smoke inhalation as they assisted those trapped or affected by the fire.

The Highfield Festival, known for its vibrant music scene and large attendance, continued with its programming after the area around the Ferris wheel was cordoned off. This decision, however, sparked discussions on safety measures at such large-scale events.

Police have initiated an investigation into the cause of the fire, with initial reports suggesting it might have originated from one of the gondolas. The festival organizers have yet to comment on the potential impact on future events or the immediate steps taken to ensure such incidents do not recur.
