UK: Essex Marine Unit Saves Yachtsman in Storm off Clacton
Clacton-on-Sea, United Kingdom - August 25, 2024
In a dramatic display of bravery and maritime skill, the Essex Police Marine Unit rescued yachtsman Roy Harris and his partner Caroline Wilson from perilous seas during an unexpected storm on Sunday, August 25th. The couple was returning to River Crouch from Kent when their yacht, the Samphire, encountered severe weather conditions.
The adventure turned dangerous when the yacht's jib sheet tore, and the vessel began taking on water amidst towering waves. Realizing the gravity of their situation, Harris issued a PAN-PAN distress call, a maritime alert indicating an urgent but not immediately life-threatening situation.
Sergeant Alex Southgate, PC John Perry, and Special Constable Scott McCabe were conducting patrols on their vessel, Sentinel, as part of Operation Wave-Breaker when they intercepted the call. Coordinating with the Dover Coastguard Operations Centre, they navigated through the turbulent waters to locate the distressed yacht near the Gunfleet Sands Offshore Wind Farm, approximately four miles off Clacton.
Upon reaching the Samphire, Southgate heroically boarded the yacht amidst crashing waves. "When Alex leapt onto the boat, touched my arm, and said 'You’re safe now,' it was such a comfort. I had been scared for my life," Harris recounted, expressing his profound gratitude. He emphasized the officers' bravery, stating, "They don’t just nick criminals, they save people’s lives."
The storm, which had not been forecasted, caught Harris by surprise. "We sailed for six to seven hours in good conditions, but then everything changed," he explained. The situation deteriorated rapidly, forcing Harris, despite his reluctance due to the busy airwaves, to seek help.
PC Perry's expert navigation allowed the police vessel to approach the Samphire safely, despite the hazardous conditions. Southgate took control of the yacht, steering it through rough seas for over two hours to the safety of Brightlingsea Harbour, a journey that would typically take 45 minutes.
Southgate highlighted the teamwork involved, "PC Perry's skill at the helm was crucial, and SC McCabe's communication kept us linked with vital support services." Their efforts were soon bolstered by the arrival of the Burnham-on-Crouch lifeboat and a crew transfer vessel from Gunfleet Sands Windfarm, showcasing the collaborative spirit of sea rescue operations.
The Essex Police Marine Unit's Operation Wave-Breaker, active from April to September, focuses on preventing anti-social behavior and promoting safety on the water. This incident serves as a testament to the unit's critical role in not only law enforcement but also in emergency response and rescue at sea.
