STORYLINE:

Chinese telecom firm Huawei is supporting the digitization of energy systems in Kenya including power grids and transmission lines in a bid to enhance their efficiency and cut down on waste and pollution.

"Our collective efforts to advance green energy in Kenya include the provision of digital infrastructure that enhances the stability of power generation and its distribution," Kebal Wang, director of the energy sector at Huawei Kenya Enterprise, said during the Huawei Kenya Energy Summit 2024 held in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

Nick Lusson, vice president of Huawei Digital Power Eastern Africa Region, also highlighted the role of digitization in the green energy transition.

"And the future of green energy, first of all, has to be digitized. It has to be digital with sensors and communication. So, of course, that needs infrastructure and fibre optics, and lots of communication and detailed intelligence. But also, we are making hardware to make this transition possible."
   
The launch of Huawei's intelligent distribution solution was a key highlight of the summit that discussed novel ways to accelerate energy intelligence in Kenya and curb greenhouse gas emissions.
   
Stephen Nzioka, director of renewable energy in the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, said that a partnership with Huawei will help digitize power utilities, enhance service provision, and improve revenue generation.

"The Internet of Things would enable real-time monitoring, control, and optimization of energy systems. We believe that application of IoT in the energy sector will enhance systems reliability, efficiency and also ensure energy systems in the country are more sustainable."
   
Senior government officials, Huawei executives, and industry leaders attended the day-long summit themed "Find the Right Technologies to Power Global Energy Transition."
