STORYLINE:
To mark the 700th anniversary this year of the death of the famous 13th-century explorer Marco Polo, a museum named after the explorer on the Croatian island of Korcula has been hosting events aimed at building bridges between East and West -- especially China and Croatia.
In his 20s, Marco Polo traveled along the ancient Silk Road to reach China and stayed there for 17 years in the 13th century. His experiences were recorded in the book "The Travels of Marco Polo," which inspired many Westerners to explore the East.

"Many people from China are very interested in Marco Polo. And when they come to Korcula, this is the first place that they will go to, to find out about the person who presented China to the rest of the world in the Middle Ages."
The Marco Polo Center was founded on July 28 last year, sponsored by the Korcula municipal government with support from the Croatian Ministry of Culture and the European Union.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): VICKO MARELIC, Curator of the Marco Polo Center
"We have several purposes. One is to research and communicate the life and legacy of Marco Polo. The second one is to have an educational element to use the Marco Polo Center as a platform for the Marco Polo global education experience. It's also to be a bridge between Korcula (Croatia) and China. We are incredibly fortunate to have Marco Polo as one of our most well-known citizens. And Korcula being the town of Marco Polo, this place allows us really to continue his legacy in the different ways and forms that I have pointed out."
