Egyptian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Ayman Ashour said on Saturday that the prime minister had been presented with an Egyptian electric car prototype that he had ordered to be developed.
Ashour revealed that a 50,000-square-meter complex is being planned for the manufacturing of these cars.
The minister explained that the "Egyptian Electric Car Manufacturing" project was launched as a step towards a promising future for scientific research in Egypt. Ashour hailed the project as a milestone in linking scientific research to industry.
Ashour added that serious steps have been taken to use exclusively local components in mechanical designs, engines, and electronic circuits. The minister called this a tremendous achievement in reducing dependence on imports and enhancing Egypt's position as a leading center of electric car manufacturing.
First Automobile Works (FAW), China's third-largest carmaker, decided recently that by 2025 it would relocate to Egypt production of its "Bestune NAT" electric vehicle.
This is part of an agreement signed with GV Auto, an Egyptian company that looks poised to help make Cairo a regional hub for the manufacture and export of electric vehicles.
