California, United States - August 22, 2024

In a spectacular display of marine wildlife behavior, researchers at the Farallon Islands National Wildlife Refuge documented an extraordinary event where a group of Bigg's killer whales, or orcas, were seen engaging with humpback whales in what appeared to be a hunting scenario. This rare sighting occurred on August 22, providing unique insights into the predatory patterns of orcas.

Gerry McChesney, the refuge manager, and Mackenzie Cahill, a wildlife refuge specialist, along with colleagues from Point Blue Conservation Science, witnessed this event. Approximately 15 orcas were involved in what seemed like a strategic hunt lasting nearly nine hours. This behavior, likened to wolves hunting on land, showcases the orcas' sophisticated hunting techniques.

The interaction was not just a fleeting glimpse; it was an extended encounter where the orcas seemed to be targeting the humpback whales for a potential meal. This event is particularly noteworthy because Bigg's killer whales, while known for hunting marine mammals like sea lions, are not commonly observed preying on humpback whales.

Photos and videos from the event have been crucial for researchers. They have allowed for the identification of several orcas known to frequent the California coast, contributing valuable data to the study of these transient orcas.
