Kyushu, Japan - August 31, 2024

Typhoon Shanshan, now a tropical depression, has wreaked havoc in Kyushu region since it made landfall in the south-western Japan on Thursday.

The typhoon has brought relentless heavy rains to the region, triggering landslides and causing extensive agricultural losses.

Floodwaters have damaged several key roads in the region, resulting in severe traffic disruptions and making daily commutes extremely difficult.

Repair work is underway, but it will take days in some areas due to the extensive damage,

The local government has put up No Entry signs on these roads to caution passersby.

"The typhoon brought torrential rains, flooding rivers, eroding riverbanks and damaging roads. This road, with a long tunnel, leads to Oita, which is a major commuting route for workers working in industrial zones such as Sakanoichi and Tsurusaki. So, it is actually a key commuting route for work, with a high traffic volume," said a local.
