An abandoned elephant calf was successfully reunited with its herd in Bargang, Assam, on September 1.

Wildlife officials used a drone to help track and locate the herd. Footage shows forest officers using ropes to help guide the calf back to the group.

The calf, estimated to be around 2 to 3 months old, was originally found trapped in the drainage of Borbeel Tea Estate.

In an extraordinary rescue operation in northeastern India's Assam, an abandoned elephant calf was successfully reunited with its herd in the early hours of the day.

The incident took place at Borbeel Tea Estate in Borgang village of Biswanath district on September 1.

Visuals showed forest officers carefully handling the elephant calf, using ropes and other safety measures. With the aid of a drone and by tracking the herd’s footprints, DFO Das personally located the herd of elephants roaming in the area.

Speaking to Newslions, Junior Assistant from the Forest Department of Sonitpur Division in Assam, Krishna Kanta Gogoi stated that at around 5:00 am, the Borgang Range Office received information about an elephant calf trapped in the drainage of Borbeel Tea Estate, Kherbari, Borgang and the rescue team was led by DFO Biswa Jyoti The calf, estimated to be 2-3 months old, had been abandoned by a herd of 20–25 elephants, believed to have strayed from the 6th addition of Kaziranga National Park. Forest staff promptly reached the location, rescued the distressed calf, and ensured it was kept under constant care until it was safely reunited with its herd.
