A large waterspout tore through the sky above homes in the Philippines.

The funnel-shaped weather phenomenon formed near islands in Bohol province on August 16, so it was seen in the houses and hotels at the beach destination.

Footage shows the waterspout tornado towering over properties and causing panic among residents.

Onlooker Eugel Suello said in the video: ‘Oh no, that's so big. Look at it.'

He captured videos of it as it was visible from the front and back of his workplace.

He said: ‘It was the first time I had seen one, and it was so strong.'

The waterspout lasted ten minutes, followed by heavy rain and strong winds.

Two types of tornadoes form at sea - tornadic waterspouts and fair-weather waterspouts. Tornadic waterspouts form from thunderstorms, just like land tornadoes, while fair-weather waterspouts are typically smaller and less powerful without the need for storms.

Both types of waterspout tornadoes are created when there is a strong difference in air pressure between the surface of the water and the air above it. This difference in pressure creates an updraft, which draws air from the surface of the water into the atmosphere. As the air rises, it cools and condenses, forming a cloud. The cloud can then rotate, forming a waterspout.
