The swimming lions of the Okavango Delta in Botswana are well renowned amongst wildlife enthusiast around the world. Living in a wilderness area that is partly covered by water most of the year, lions in the Delta are well known for their swimming abilities. In general, lions hate swimming and try to avoid getting into water at all costs. The lions of the Okavango Delta had to adapt and in order to reach certain parts of their territories, they had no other choice but to become great swimmers, continuously having to cross one of the many hundred deep water channels running through their territories. We were lucky enough to find three lionesses on the opposite bank of a deep-water channel. At first, they were just drinking water, and it never crossed our minds that those lions would attempt to swim across. When one of the lions slowly entered the water, I quickly realized what was happening and started filming. It was clear that the lioness did not like being in the water at all. You can’t blame a lion for not wanting to get into cold, crocodile and hippo invested waters. The other two lions hesitated, watching the first one going in slowly. The lioness kept snarling at the water as if she was warning any crocodiles or hippos not to get closer. The lions were for obvious reasons very nervous and took it very slow and carefully. Then all of a sudden it was a leap of faith and there they were, the swimming lions of the Okavango Delta in action right in front of us. It was incredible to see how fast they were swimming through the deep part of the crossing, just by judging the wake each one created in the water. In a flash they managed to cross the dreaded and very dangerous river. All wet and muddy, the three lions ended up back on dry land and continued deeper into their territory. What an incredible sight and I was so happy to have seen and filmed such a special occasion in the African wild.
