STORYLINE:
Kenyan President William Ruto has said that as China-Africa cooperation thrives, both sides agree on the need to foster green and inclusive growth, peace, and civilizational dialogue.
He made the remarks during an interview with Chinese media in Nairobi, just days before his arrival in Beijing for the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
Ruto said Kenya and China have enjoyed over six decades of diplomatic relations, resulting in significant achievements, including the construction of modern infrastructure projects.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): WILLIAM RUTO, Kenyan President
"As we expand and collaborate in the public sector, there is a growing momentum that is building around the private sector as well.
I will give you an example of Chinese companies that are now investing in Kenya, including the tall building at GTC (Global Trade Center).
We're looking at how our own private sector can learn and work with the expertise and the knowledge and transfer that knowledge to our own private sector, so that we can build a model that works for Kenya."
Ruto said the 2024 FOCAC summit, scheduled for Sept. 4-6 in Beijing, will open up opportunities for cooperation between Africa and China across various fields.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): WILLIAM RUTO, Kenyan President
"This (FOCAC summit) will open up opportunities, especially the focus of this meeting on industrialization, on agricultural mechanization and on building talent. These are areas of importance to both those of us from the African continent and China. We have the largest pool of young people anywhere in the world.
The building of synergy around mechanization, the unlocking of the potential that comes with climate change, and that comes with renewable energy, where China is a leading country in renewable energy technology.
Our continent possesses 60 percent of renewable energy globally. Combining our renewable energy resources and renewable energy technology that is in China will be a win-win outcome."
The president said the Global South, represented by China and Africa, has a critical role in crafting new policies and laws to promote climate action, reform governance, advance peace, and secure long-term stability in the wake of profound geopolitical shifts.
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): WILLIAM RUTO, Kenyan President
"A combination of China and Africa in putting forward ideas, proposals, suggestions on what and how we can resolve global issues, whether they are social, whether they are around peace and stability, or whether they are economic, around investment, or indeed ideas around climate action.
That is a positive direction because it enriches the pool of ideas that all of us can tap into to resolve global challenges."
