STORYLINE:
A total of 6,267 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands, a Spanish archipelago off the coast of northwestern Africa, during July and August -- the highest summer figure since detailed monthly records of migratory flows began, according to data published on Monday by the Spanish Interior Ministry.
Arrivals in the Canary Islands skyrocketed in the second half of August, reaching 3,220 people, nearly half of all migrant entries recorded throughout the summer.
So far this year, over 25,000 people have arrived on the Canary Islands' coasts, marking an increase of 123 percent compared to the same period in 2023.
