This is the heartwarming moment fishermen rescued a huge sea turtle stuck in a ghost net in Thailand.

Jirasak Joke Phophet and his colleagues spotted the stricken marine creature floating in the sea in Amphoe Thalang, Phuket, on August 30.

Footage shows the men aboard a boat heading towards the sea creature. One of them cut through the net with a knife. Moments later, they successfully freed the animal and let it go back swimming in the water.

The filmer said: 'We are grateful that we were able to spot the turtle and have helped it.'

Ghost nets - often cut loose from fishing trawlers - are one of the biggest threats to marine life.

Thousands of animals suffer from ghost nets, one of the biggest threats to marine life, as well as other debris scattered in the oceans.

According to UNESCO's Facts & Figures on Marine Pollution, more than one million marine animals, including mammals, fish, sharks, turtles, and birds, are killed each year due to plastic debris in the ocean.
