STORYLINE:
The 2024 Legislators Forum for Friendly Exchanges was held in China's metropolis of Shanghai on Tuesday.
More than 40 legislators and former legislators from 40-plus countries attended the forum, along with over 70 deputies to China's National People's Congress and to the people's congresses at the subnational level.
The annual event aimed to provide a platform for legislative exchanges and the strengthening of friendly relations among participating nations.
In interviews with Xinhua, some attendees called for dialogue, understanding and cooperation between their country and China.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): ROGER KOPPEL, Former member of the National Council of Switzerland
"I would say it's a very impressive way that you are going. Every country has its own way and I hope that Switzerland and China, a small country and a large country, can be partners in building a better future."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): BIRO ROZALIA-IBOLYA, President of Commission for Foreign Policy of Chamber of Deputies, Romania
"What impressed me most was the incredible economic growth that China has (achieved) in the last 10, 15, 20 years, first of all. And the second, the friendly Chinese people. What I think is that we have much to learn from each other. For this reason, my proposal in one of the sessions is to keep, to continue the dialogue among us."
This year's forum, with the theme "Revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development," consisted of eight sub-forums focusing on pressing global issues such as economic recovery, global security, climate change and environmental protection.
Before the forum, the legislators spent two days exploring Shanghai's cultural and economic landscape.
