Siberia, Russia - September 2, 2024

This is the moment a feisty black woodpecker gives a wildlife camera trap a hammering on a nature reserve in Russia.

The bizarre footage was caught when the bird-brained vandal flew into action at the State Sayano-Shushenski Nature Reserve in Siberia, on 2nd September.

It later emerged that it was the second camera the same bird had trashed in minutes.

As the camera keeps running the woodpecker is seen smashing its powerful beak into the camera repeatedly, stopping only apparently to check its handiwork.

Experts say woodpeckers can reach 1,400gs of force when they hammer their beaks into trees - ten times what a human could take before passing out.

Some experts say territorial birds like woodpeckers are triggered by seeing their own reflections in the camera lens.

Others say they are after insects and grubs that nest in the shelter of the camera traps.
