UK: UK protesters urge gov’t to stop weapon export to Israel
London, United Kingdom - September 07, 2024
Storyline:
Tens of thousands of pro-Palestinian demonstrators gathered in London on Saturday, urging the British government to stop supplying weapons to Israel.
About 25,000 people participated in the event, with demonstrators marching from central London to the Israeli embassy in the UK.
The London police had taken preparations, imposing strict restrictions on the location and time of the demonstration to prevent conflicts. Some demonstrators were still seen being taken away by the police.
The UK government on Sept 3 announced the suspension of some arms export licenses to Israel.
Foreign Secretary David Lammy informed lawmakers in parliament that around 30 licenses, out of a total of about 350, were being suspended.
Lammy said that assessments had indicated a clear risk that UK arms could be used to commit or facilitate serious violations of international humanitarian law.
