STORYLINE:

After a shooting incident on the West Bank side of the King Hussein Bridge, Jordan's Interior Ministry said Sunday that initial investigations show that the shooter is a Jordanian citizen.

The ministry identified the shooter as Maher Diab Hussein Al-Jazi, a resident of the Al-Husseiniya area in Ma'an Governorate, according to a statement from the state-run Petra news agency.

Initial investigations indicate that the incident was an individual act. Inquiries are still underway to uncover more details, according to the ministry.

On the same day, hundreds of protestors in Jordan took to the streets of downtown Amman to show support for the shooter.

Earlier on Sunday, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that a driver approached the bridge from the Jordanian side, exited his truck, and opened fire on Israeli security guards. Three guards were fatally shot before the attacker was himself shot dead by Israeli forces.

Following the shooting, the Israel Airports Authority said in a statement that it has shut down the Allenby Bridge, known in Jordan as the King Hussein Bridge. Israel also announced the closures of the Wadi Araba Crossing, or Yitzhak Rabin Crossing, between Israel's Red Sea resort city of Eilat and Jordan's Aqaba, as well as of the Jordan River Crossing, or Sheikh Hussein Bridge, between Israel's Beit She'an and Jordan's Irbid.
