A couple washed away by floods clung to the roof of their car to survive the rising waters in India.

The pair were trying to drive across the surging body of water in their white sedan when they were swept away by the gushing deluge in Gujarat on September 8.

They scampered onto the roof of the vehicle and were stuck there for two hours before being saved.

Footage shows the couple being extracted from the top of the car by Good Samaritans and rescuers.

The boyfriend Suresh Mistry said: ‘As we were crossing, the water rose and the current became so strong. We were pushed for miles and called the police for help.'

The couple was unharmed and were assisted to safety.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasted heavy rain in southern regions until early this week, including Gujarat.

Over the last weeks, monsoon storms have killed dozens in India as a deep depression formed over land and moved gradually over the Arabian Sea.

The bad weather caused widespread flood as the region reported record rainfalls of more than 100 per cent increase.
