Shoppers tear open food and drink after false rumour of closure sale sparks buying frenzy in China
On September 6, in Zhecheng County, Shangqiu City, Henan Province, a rumour spread that a local supermarket was about to close down. As a result, a large number of customers with prepaid memberships rushed into the supermarket to buy goods.
Some people even tore open food packaging and ate and drank on the spot, leaving the scene in chaos.
According to a staff member at the supermarket, many customers heard the rumour about the closure and lined up to shop, resulting in a customer flow several times the usual amount.
Most of the customers were using prepaid cards, and while there was no large-scale theft or robbery, many people were indeed eating and drinking inside the store. Currently, the supermarket's goods have been completely sold out, and the losses are still being calculated.
Afterward, the supermarket issued an announcement stating that it would suspend operations for several days starting from September 6 and would resume business after restocking.
On the afternoon of September 6, a staff member from the Zhecheng County Market Supervision Bureau responded by saying that the matter had been handled, and the rumour about the supermarket's closure was false.
