Anglers rescued a sea turtle they found tangled in a ghost net while sailing off the coast of Thailand.

The fishermen on boat passed by shelled marine animal struggling to free itself in discarded net near the surface of the water in Phuket on August 30.

Footage shows the DIY rescue operation where the kind trawlers pulled the pile of net that trapped the turtle.

One of them used a knife to cut the net while his colleague pulled the trash off the water.

They then released the turtle back to the sea unharmed and carried the ghost net with them to keep it from endangering another animal in the sea.

One of the fishermen Nattawat Phophet said: ‘We saved the turtle from the net near Sarasin bridge about 15 km (9 miles) from the shore.'

Nattawat added they turtled weighed 20kg and could have been stuck for days.

He said: ‘We helped cut the net that held the turtle and we were successful. It survived and sway away safely.'

Ghost nets are abandoned, lost, or discarded fishing gear that continues to float in the ocean, causing harm to marine life.

These nets can drift for years, trapping and killing various sea creatures, including turtles, which often become entangled in them.
