Terrifying moment bridge collapses in Vietnam as Typhoon Yagi pummels country
At 10 am on September 9, in Phu Tho Province, Vietnam, the Phong Chau Bridge collapsed under the impact of heavy rain and strong winds brought by Typhoon Yagi.
The collapse caused several cars, motorcycles, electric bikes, and people to fall into the water, creating a critical situation.
Dashcam footage shows that at the time of the incident, traffic on Phong Chau Bridge was heavy, with numerous cars, motorcycles, and electric bikes traveling across. Suddenly, the bridge collapsed ahead, and some vehicles plunged into the river.
Rescue personnel quickly arrived at the scene to carry out urgent rescue operations. However, due to the high water level and fast currents, the rescue efforts faced significant challenges. As of 1 pm on the day of the incident, four people had been rescued, but 13 others remained missing. The search and rescue operations are ongoing.
Phong Chau Bridge, which spans nearly 380 metres, was completed in July 1995 and serves as an important transportation hub in the area. However, over time, the bridge's load-bearing capacity gradually decreased. Despite multiple repairs, including one in 2013, and a ban on vehicles weighing 18 tons or more since 2019, the collapse could not be prevented.
