Furious villagers hunted a half-tonne crocodile that killed a grandfather in Indonesia.

The residents gathered in Karangan River to search for the large 78.7st (500kg) croc that attacked their neighbour Onde, 61, and damaged their boats in East Kalimantan on September 6.

Footage shows the 16.4ft beast swimming with its head exposed on the surface of the water when locals found it near a bridge.

They later forced it towards the riverbank where one of the neighbours struck it with a wooden spear.

Dozens gathered in the area and helped carry the wounded animal away from the river and tied its body with ropes.

Village chief Aspul Anuar said: ‘When residents fish in the river, the crocodile would chase them. It would attack boats and fishermen looking for shrimp and fish.'

The village chief added that when they finally secured the animal, its teeth still had the hair of its previous victim.

He said: ‘There were hair in its mouth. It was aggressive, so a fisherman stabbed it with a spear.'

The residents helped carry the crocodile downstream and let it float in the water. Village chief Aspul said: ‘We threw it in the water because it was already dead.'

Human-crocodile conflicts in Indonesia have been a growing concern, especially as human populations expand into habitats traditionally occupied by crocodiles. This has led to more frequent encounters between crocodiles and people, sometimes with dangerous outcomes.
