Mummified ancestors were displayed in a gruesome ritual by the Toraja tribe in Indonesia.

Footage shows how 65 dead bodies, previously interred in stone graves and traditional Toraja tombs, were exhumed during the Manene ritual on August 20.

The ceremony, held every four years, took place at Liang Lo'ko' Kuku in Warian Hamlet, Ampang Batu Village, Rindingallo District, North Toraja Regency, South Sulawesi.

Remains were meticulously cleaned, dried under the sun, and re-dressed in new clothing, including cloth and sarongs, before being placed back in their coffins and reburied in the tombs.

The Manene ritual, a step-by-step tradition, involves changing the clothes of these preserved relatives as a mark of respect and devotion. This practice is carried out after the rice harvest and is a significant cultural event attracting local and international tourists.

The Toraja tribe has maintained this unique tradition for generations, showcasing their deep respect for their ancestors and preserving their cultural heritage.
