A group of hapless holidaymakers had to be rescued from a mountainside in Kazakhstan after trudging up the 11,000ft high peak and losing their way on the journey down.

The seven tourists had reportedly failed to calculate how long the trek up and down the Big Altmaty mountain would take and got stranded in the dark.

To add to the drama on 8th September, two of the group fell ill and the rest of them split into two groups baffling rescuers.

Rescuers in a helicopter eventually found the group exhausted and frozen on the slope before ferrying them down for emergency medical care.

The Kazakhstan Ministry of Emergency Situations later said on its official Telegram social media channel that the rescue operation had taken a marathon 15 hours.
