This is the moment a dozen adorable flamingo chicks find their wobbly feet after a breeding programme at a zoo in Austria.

The 12 youngsters were hatched at the Schoenbrunn Zoo in Vienna after a boost to their parents' natural instincts following the end of bird flu health restrictions.

Footage obtained by Newsflash shows them exploring their enclosure still clad in their downy grey baby feathers as they cautiously leave their mums' secure thick mud nests.

Some are seen checking out their swimming skills while others strut around the pond on their long leg.

Other mums can be seen still hatching their huge eggs,
Keepers say that when they have grown larger the chicks will leave the family enclosure to mature safely in small nurseries.

It will take around three years for their trademark pink-hued plumage to emerge, they explain.

In the wild, pigments from the tiny crustaceans flamingos eat give them their bright colour and in zoos, a special diet is provided to achieve the same effect.

New flamingos from the Bratislava Zoo also helped in boosting breeding pairs.
