Massive wind turbines that were supposed to withstand storms ended up left bent and twisted, unable to take the force of Super Typhoon Yagi.

The typhoon struck Hainan Province in China on Friday, September 7, bringing violent winds and heavy rain that caused widespread devastation.

Footage shows the Mullan Bay wind turbines flattened by the typhoon in Wenchang. The storm also disrupted communication, electricity, and roads, burying them under its wreckages.

Winds reportedly up to 234 km/h (145 mph) were noted at the centre of the activity, making it the world's second most powerful tropical cyclone this year.

The massive turbines were in an area where the Wenchang Wind Power Plant of Huaneng Hainan Company was removing smaller turbines and installing larger ones.

The project will build 16 6.25MW typhoon-resistant wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 100MW and is set to be completed in October this year.

It is believed the turbines that were destroyed were the new ones under construction, and it is not clear if they had been completed when the typhoon hit.
