Six villagers catching shrimp stranded in rising river in Indonesia
Six villagers who were catching shrimp became stranded in a rising river before neighbours rescued them.
The residents were setting their traps in the middle of Meukek River when a flood from a mountain gushed through in Aceh province, Indonesia on September 11.
They did not reach the banks on time and struggled through the currents until a team of rescuers and good Samaritans assisted their evacuation.
Footage shows the stranded locals standing amid fast-flowing water as the rescuers approached them. The group survived by clinging to large rocks.
They held onto each other while holding a rope, using their weight to reach the edge of the banks safely.
South Aceh Regional Disaster Management Agency head Zainal said: ‘The witnesses said the water suddenly grew bigger and they tried to save themselves.
'Some of them did not reach the banks on time so we did a rescue operation. All six people were safe.'
In another village, dump trucks were trapped in the same river, and the drivers had to be rescued.
Indonesia and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season, which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
