On September 5, at the Green Rabbit Animal and Plant Theme Park in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province, a pelican swallowed its pigeon "colleague" once again. A nearby male tourist saw the incident and quickly intervened, prying open the pelican's beak and rescuing the pigeon within seconds.

According to the park's manager, although pelicans are known for their large beaks and throat pouches, which allow them to swallow large amounts of fish and other small animals, the pelicans in this theme park rarely actually swallow other animals.

The manager stated that in the past year, this pelican had never successfully swallowed any pigeons or other animals. The incident may have been a misjudgment or an act of curiosity on the part of the pelican.

Just recently, on August 28, a similar incident occurred at the theme park when a pelican swallowed a pigeon, which was then rescued by staff members. This event was witnessed and recorded by several visitors.

Similar incidents have occurred before, such as on May 4, when a pelican swallowed a duckling, prompting another emergency rescue by the staff.

It is understood that a pelican’s beak length is about one-third of its body. The upper part of its beak is similar to other birds, but the lower part is unique: a pouch-like structure made of skin called a "throat pouch."

Scientists believe this pouch evolved from the skin of the throat to help the bird catch prey in water—opening, scooping, and closing its beak with seamless precision.

However, it has been observed that when pelicans put things in their mouths, it is not always for the purpose of natural, targeted hunting. Sometimes, they do so simply out of curiosity.
