STORYLINE:
China and Caribbean countries expressed their hope to deepen cooperation in emerging sectors during the Ministerial Conference of the Fourth China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum.
The three-day meeting, which concluded on Saturday, took place in south China's island province of Hainan. It centered on emerging sectors and discussed the new opportunities and patterns that green, low-carbon development and digital technologies have brought to China-Caribbean cooperation.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): WAYNE MCCOOK, Assistant Secretary-General of the Community of Caribbean States (CARICOM)
"We are encouraged by the call for this forum to consider cooperation in trade facilitation and liberalization, sanitary and fight to sanitary matters, standards and conformity assessment and e-commerce. We are very interested in the suggested dialogue on trade cooperation while requiring that this will require careful consideration and due attention to sense the sensitivities of our various economic sectors."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): CHAD BLACKMAN, Minister of Economic Affairs and Investment of Barbados
"The hope is that I am to be here in China. Only yesterday, we would have signed an MoU focusing on different cooperation for unimpeded trade between China and Barbados.
Now we want to go further and ensure that businesses from Barbados can have the market in China to export their goods and their services. And of course on the reciprocal side, China will therefore continue to also have deepened cooperation with Barbados for trade."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): LENNOX ANDREWS, Minister of Economic Development, Planning, Agriculture and Lands, Forestry, Marine Resources, and Cooperatives of Grenada
"I mentioned around 12 different areas going forward for cooperation. I expect to sign the agreement for the blue economy in the coming days. Renewable energy is another strong area for us. And therefore we want to cooperate with China to help us to be able to adapt to climate change, so that in so doing, we can mitigate the negative effect that climate change would have."
