A pet buffalo in Indonesia has a fifth leg dangling from its chest.

The farm animal was born with an extra limb but grew up to become a healthy companion to its owner in East Nusa Tenggara.

Footage shows the bison feeding on fresh grass growing around its caretaker's home.

It can walk properly despite a smaller front leg poking from its upper body just below its neck.

The owner said: ‘My neighbours, including our village chief, like to come here and feed my buffalo. They believe it is one of a kind.'

A buffalo or any animal with five legs can result from a rare congenital abnormality, such as polymelia.

Polymelia is a birth defect where an animal is born with extra limbs. These extra limbs can be due to genetic mutations, improper cell division during embryonic development, or conjoined twinning, where part of a twin's body, like a leg, is underdeveloped and remains attached to the surviving animal.

While rare, this condition has been documented in various species, including cows and buffaloes. The extra limb may not be fully functional and could sometimes be surgically removed if it affects the animal's quality of life.
