Waterspout tornado swirls across lake in Indonesia
This is the terrifying moment a large waterspout tornado tore across a lake in Indonesia.
The weather phenomenon formed at Lake Tondano in Minahasa Regency, North Sulawesi Province, on Monday, September 9.
The whirlwind emerged amid thick dark clouds, appearing to connect the lake's surface with the sky. It lasted several minutes before dissipating on its own.
There were no reports of damage or injuries following the incident.
Waterspouts come in two types. Tornadic waterspouts form from thunderstorms, similar to land tornadoes, while fair-weather waterspouts are smaller, less powerful, and do not require storms. Both types develop due to a significant pressure difference between the water's surface and the air above, creating an updraft that can lead to a rotating waterspout.
