A crocodile was caught in a residential area in India.

Footage shows villagers successfully capturing the giant reptile, secured with a rope around its mouth and body, in a village in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh on September 15.

The 7ft beast was initially spotted in the morning at Sambharpur hamlet, close to the ISKCON Temple and within the area covered by the Bithoor Police Station. Barking dogs alerted the residents to the animal's presence.

Police were notified, and upon their arrival, the reptile was loaded onto a truck and transferred to the forest department for further management.

Reports suggest the crocodile had entered the village from the nearby Ganga River.

No one was injured in the incident.

India has two main crocodile species - the saltwater croc and the mugger croc, which is found in freshwater rivers.
