Northern Greece is facing a severe water crisis due to a prolonged drought. The region has experienced below-average rainfall for nearly three years, resulting in widespread water shortages and significant impacts on local biodiversity.

Footage from the Kilkis region of Greece shows the vanished Lake Pikrolimni after months of extended drought and a summer of record-breaking temperatures. The lake’s desiccated remains reveal cracked earth, dead birds, and a persistent stench.

Pikrolimni, the only salt lake in Greece, is a unique biotope featuring rare halophytic vegetation surrounded by common reeds. It supports various common and endangered bird species. Designated as a Natura 2000 site of community interest and a special protection area since 1996, Pikrolimni is also protected by the Ramsar Convention.

This year, we didn’t have any rain. Especially in the summer, it rained only twice suddenly, but the rain was brief, and the lake couldn’t retain any water.

I go to the lake every day on my bicycle. I saw it last year and the year before with water and wildlife, like flamingos. However, since March, the lake has been drying up, and this has never happened before—there has been no water in the lake so early in the year.
