An iPhone fell from a parachutist's backpack 10,000ft above the ground - and astonishingly survived the drop.

The soldiers were jumping off a helicopter for free fall training when their squaddie's Apple device tumbled out of his bag in Lopburi province, Thailand, on September 10.

Footage shows the uniformed men hopping off the aircraft one by one. An action camera also recorded their descent.

The smartphone plunged through the air, reaching terminal velocity at around 5,000ft and travelling at an estimated speed of 22 mph, before crashing into a forest below.

When the soldiers reached the ground, they found it was not damaged, and safely tucked inside a belt bag.

Footage shows its owner using a FindMy feature for Apple devices, leading them in the middle of tall grasses.

He unzipped the container, and the iPhone was still working, amusing the two soldiers.

Earlier this year, an iPhone 14 dropped 16,000ft off an Alaska Airlines flight after an exit door detached.

However, the phone was found by a resident in Portland, Oregon still in perfect condition.

Duncan Watts, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Oslo, said the iPhone from Alaska Airlines could have survived due to air resistance.

He said: 'The basic answer is air resistance. In reality, the phone would be tumbling quite a bit and get quite a lot of wind, essentially giving an upward force.'
