USA: CAL FIRE's C-130H Airtanker Makes First Retardant Drop in Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit
United States - September 15, 2024
In a significant event for aerial firefighting efforts, CAL FIRE's newly operational C-130H air tanker made its debut drop of fire retardant in the Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit on September 15. The aircraft, known for its capacity to deliver 4,000 gallons of retardant in a single pass, targeted the head of the Cougar Fire in southern Sonoma County, marking a historic moment for local wildfire suppression strategies.
The Cougar Fire, which had ignited earlier in the day, prompted a swift response from CAL FIRE, employing both ground and aerial resources to contain the blaze. The introduction of the C-130H's capabilities into this firefight not only showcased advanced firefighting technology but also highlighted CAL FIRE's commitment to enhancing its response to increasingly severe wildfires.
This was the first instance where the C-130H has been utilized for such operations within the Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit, demonstrating the aircraft's effectiveness in combating fire fronts in challenging terrains. The retardant drop aimed at the fire's head serves to slow the fire's progression, allowing ground crews more time to establish containment lines.
