Khun Tan Tunnel a train ride through what was Thailand's longest tunnel in the picturesque Khun Tan National Park
Khun Tan railway tunnel is in the scenic Khun Tan National Park on the northern line from Bangkok to Chiang Mai.
At the northern end of the tunnel is Khun Tan station, the highest station in Thailand at 578 m.
The tunnel was, until recently Thailand's longest railway tunnel at 1362.10 m.
Construction was started in 1907 and was completed some 11 years later in 1918. Construction was disrupted owing to the arrest of its German engineers in World War I it is reported.
At the time of construction this area was full of dangerous wild animals including tigers and snakes and it is reported that over 1000 workers died of malaria or cholera during construction.
This short video is taken from the "local" service from Chiang Mai to Nakhon Sawan, this service was not airconditioned and as such I was able to open the window and shoot as we went along.
