STORYLINE:

Women in Türkiye outlive men by an average of 5.3 years, with life expectancies of 80 years for women and 74.7 years for men, according to official data released on Wednesday.

The overall life expectancy at birth in Türkiye is now 77.3 years, a slight decline from 77.5 years in the 2020-2022 period, as reported by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat).

The data also reveal a strong correlation between education and life expectancy. Individuals with higher education levels tend to live longer, with a gap of about five years in life expectancy between a 30-year-old with less than secondary education and one with a higher degree.

Tunceli province in eastern Türkiye has the highest life expectancy at birth, averaging 80.8 years, while Kilis province in the south has the lowest at 76.1 years. In Istanbul, Türkiye's most populous city, life expectancy at birth is 78.6 years-75.8 years for men and 81.3 years for women-exceeding the national average.
