Italy - September 19, 2024

The Emilia-Romagna region has been grappling with severe weather conditions, prompting over 500 rescue operations by the National Fire Corps in the last 24 hours alone. The region, particularly the province of Ravenna, has been at the epicenter of the crisis due to overflowing rivers, leading to critical situations in several towns.

In Ravenna, the situation has been exacerbated by the flooding of the Senio torrent in Cotignola and the Lamone River in Bagnacavallo, specifically in the Traversara area. The flooding has necessitated the deployment of two Drago helicopters for rescue operations, evacuating individuals trapped in their homes due to rising water levels. Additionally, landslides in Casola Valsenio have blocked local roads, further complicating the emergency response.

The province of Forli-Cesena is also facing challenges, with aquatic rescue teams from the National Fire Corps assisting in the evacuation of 14 people, including seven with disabilities from a health care facility in Forli's via Zignola, along with saving approximately 100 animals from floodwaters. Operations in Forli's San Benedetto district involved aiding stranded individuals and assisting drivers whose vehicles had stalled due to flooding.

As of 5:30 PM, the situation has escalated with two individuals reported missing in Bagnacavallo, where search and rescue efforts are ongoing. More than 30 residents have been evacuated from their homes following the breach of the Lamone River's embankment. The National Fire Corps' helicopters have been instrumental in these rescue efforts, with video footage capturing the dramatic scenes of aerial rescues from rooftops.

The emergency services' efforts have been relentless, with personnel working around the clock to address the myriad of issues caused by this unexpected weather event. The community is rallying together, with local authorities and volunteers providing aid where possible, focusing on safety and shelter for those affected.
