A zoo in Shanwei, Guangdong Province, recently went viral for its bizarre panda enclosure that saw Chow Chows dyed black and white to look like the animals.

The zoo's manager claimed the idea was to chance the Exotic Pet Zoo's appeal and "fun factor". They also assured the public that the dye used is safe and non-toxic.

However, this creative move has stirred considerable controversy. On one hand, some netizens were amazed and praised the zoo’s creativity, calling the activity novel and fun, offering a unique experience to visitors.

On the other hand, many expressed concerns and doubts, fearing that the dyeing process could harm the dogs’ health. They pointed out that pets’ skin is sensitive, and chemical dyes might cause allergic reactions or skin issues. Additionally, critics argued that this practice disregards the animals' welfare and feelings, and shows a lack of respect for them.

In response to the concerns, the zoo reiterated that they prioritise the health and welfare of the animals. They assured that all dyeing procedures were conducted under professional supervision and that the dyes used were harmless. They promised to continue monitoring the dogs' health and take any necessary steps to ensure their well-being.

Earlier in May this year, a zoo in Taizhou, Jiangsu Province, exhibited two Chow Chows dyed to resemble pandas, also garnering significant public attention. The zoo explained that the goal was to enhance the zoo's fun factor and increase visitor traffic.
