In a heartwarming tale of wildlife rehabilitation, a peregrine falcon, once grounded with a droopy wing, soared back into the wild skies of Mancos, thanks to the collective efforts of a local family, the Durango Animal Hospital, and the Colorado Parks and Wildlife's Frisco Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. This triumphant return was captured on video, showcasing the falcon's dramatic flight to freedom.

The story began on March 29, when a family in Mancos stumbled upon an injured peregrine falcon on their property. Despite its evident injury, the falcon's spirit remained unbroken, lingering around as if seeking help. The family, recognizing the bird's plight, managed to secure it overnight, ensuring its safety and warmth before seeking professional care.

Transported to the Durango Animal Hospital, the falcon underwent thorough examinations which revealed a severe soft tissue injury. With no fractures but in need of extensive rehabilitation, the bird was transferred to CPW’s Frisco Creek Wildlife Rehab in Del Norte. There, over the summer, it embarked on a journey of recovery, gradually strengthening in flight cages, under the watchful eyes of wildlife experts.

The video of the release, shared by the wildlife center, captures the moment of liberation. Frisco Creek Wildlife Rehabilitation Center manager Michael Sirochman, along with District Wildlife Manager Andy Brown, returned the falcon to the very property where it was found, a fitting circle of events. The family, who had initially saved the bird, watched with bated breath as Andy Brown gave the falcon a gentle toss skyward.

The footage shows the falcon taking to the air with a burst of energy, its wings beating confidently against the sky. It circled the property, demonstrating its regained prowess and freedom, before disappearing into the horizon, a testament to its successful rehabilitation.
